Arbor Day

Help us Celebrate Trees

The Arbor Day Foundation has taken on a brave initiative – The Time for Trees Initiative. And the West Virginia Forestry supports it. With efforts to plant 100 million trees in forests and communities and inspire 5 million new tree planters by 2022, the Arbor Day Foundation needs our help and yours.

About Arbor Day

What is Arbor Day

Arbor Day is set aside as a day when trees are celebrated and planted in order to preserve this valuable resource and improve our quality of life.

West Virginia celebrates Arbor Day on the 3rd Friday of April each year. Cities throughout the state have different methods for celebrating, but all include planting new trees. Learn more about Urban Forestry.

How Can You Celebrate

Schools can utilize this national holiday to teach the importance of our trees. The annual Arbor Day Poster contest is also available for school participation. Each year a theme is chosen and students in the 4th and 5th grade can participate to win a $50 US Savings Bond from the West Virginia Forestry Association. Find out more.

Tree City USA

The Tree City USA program is a nationwide movement that helps communities manage and expand their public trees. The program recognizes the Tree City USA status when the communities have successfully followed a framework for improving and managing their urban forestry, one of them being the celebration of Arbor Day.
